Atalaya Golf & Country Club

Course Overview

Atalaya Golf & Country Club is one of the most established golf destinations on Spain’s Costa del Sol, offering two distinctive 18-hole layouts set amid mature parkland between Marbella and Estepona. The club was founded as a pure golf venue rather than a residential development, giving both members and visitors a sense of tradition and tranquillity that’s become increasingly rare in the region.

The Old Course, opened in 1968 and designed by German architect Bernhard von Limburger, is one of the oldest and most respected courses on the Costa del Sol. Characterised by wide, undulating fairways, elevated greens and lush vegetation, it blends natural beauty with strategic subtleties. The generous fairways framed by eucalyptus, pine and cactus trees make it accessible for a range of abilities, yet the subtle contours of the greens and carefully placed bunkers ensure it remains engaging for more experienced players. Many holes offer scenic views of the Sierra Blanca mountains, the Mediterranean Sea and the course’s lakes and streams, which support a variety of wildlife including resident swans.

Added in 1990, the New Course by Paul Krings presents a contrasting test. Located on higher terrain above the Old Course, it is much shorter but demands greater precision with narrower fairways and more pronounced elevation changes. Strategic shot making is rewarded here, with views of the surrounding countryside, Mediterranean coast and Gibraltar visible on clear days. Its technical layout makes the New Course an appealing choice for golfers seeking a more fun & tactical challenge.

Together, these two courses offer variety and balance: the Old Course with its classic parkland feel and walkable comfort, and the New Course with its precision-oriented routing and elevated panoramas. Complemented by excellent practice facilities and a welcoming clubhouse environment, Atalaya remains a favourite among golfers exploring the Costa del Sol.
